Myanmar frees thousands of prisoners on Independence Day

(MENAFN) Myanmar’s military junta has granted amnesty to more than 6,000 prisoners nationwide as the country celebrated its 78th Independence Day, according to local media reports.

The National Defense and Security Council issued an order freeing 6,134 prisoners and detainees held in prisons, detention centers, and camps across the country, the outlet Eleven reported. The decree stated that the measure was intended to mark Independence Day and to “pacify the hearts and minds of the people and respect humanity.”

In addition, Myanmar’s acting president pardoned and deported 52 foreign prisoners, including Chinese nationals serving sentences in various detention facilities. The order emphasized that this decision aimed to “maintain friendly relations between countries and respect humanitarian considerations.”

The move follows a similar amnesty in November, when the military released over 3,000 political prisoners ahead of December elections and dropped charges against 5,580 people.

Since seizing power in a 2021 coup, the military junta ousted the elected government led by the National League for Democracy (NLD), triggering widespread civil unrest. Protests were met with violent crackdowns, resulting in thousands of arrests, including the imprisonment of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who faces a cumulative sentence of 33 years.
